E-mail/Text Messages freeze/freezing when downloading/updating new messages/emails

For the past couple of months, my Blackberry has been freezing when downloading new e-mails. If I'm on the home screen, I can try to open my text messages or e-mail messages program, but nothing happens. My other programs work in the meantime, but I'm frozen out of messages, even when I can see the notification that I have new ones.

Please use plain text.

Re: E-mail/Text Messages freeze/freezing when downloading/updating new messages/emails

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

Best!

Re: E-mail/Text Messages freeze/freezing when downloading/updating new messages/emails

Thank you for showing interest in helping out. Unfortunatley, I have had this issue multiple times over the past couple of months, and I have multiple times done a battery pop reboot. In fact, on top of the limited messaging freezes, I have also experienced a couple of complete Blackberry freezes, that I have also been forced to perform a battery pop reboot.

OK...since you left that out of your first post (and my clairvoyance app has been failing lately), I am force to ask...please list ALL things you have already attempted, including the specific results of what you've already attempted.

Re: E-mail/Text Messages freeze/freezing when downloading/updating new messages/emails

I have attempted multiple battery pop reboots, and each time it has temporarily solved the problem.

I have also done software updates, and desktop back-ups before completely reinstalling the software.

I have changed the battery.

I have not changed the media card.

Which would indicate that there is a memory leak somewhere. Are you watching your available AppMemory as time progresses? This will give you an indicator if there is a memory leak. On some prior BB models, daily batt-pulls were not uncommon.

It would be useful to know exactly what OS level your BB is on (all 4 octets please -- 6.0.0.706 is the most recent from your listed carrier, but other carriers might have a newer version). Also, have you used a utility like BBSAK to truly WIPE the device before loading the OS?

Both are likely not causal.

The most likely causes are:

  1. An unstable core OS level that has memory leaks.
  2. An unstable 3rd party app, left running in background, that is consuming resources, and/or has a memory leak

When you hold the Logo_Blue.gif key, what apps show up? Do this right after a batt-pull and again after a couple of hours of normal use. There will always be 5 persistent apps (BBM, Phone, Home, Browser, Messages)...any others are things you've added to your BB and allowed to remain resident...and those are likely candidates for this memory leak.

Good luck and let us know!
