GPS and Verizon

Hi folks, new to BB and was wondering if someone could answer this question. I understand that some carriers (Verizon) disable some functions to certain phones like my new 8330 Curve. People say that the internal GPS is disabled but when I look at my homescreen I see the little GPS icon underneth the signal strength icon (looks like crosshairs with a circle). I thought that icon was that of GPS, am I wrong?

Thanks.

Re: GPS and Verizon

To verify if your device has GPS,

Go to Options > Advanced Options >  GPS.

If the feilds are blank, or a blank page, it means there is no GPS built into the device.

It there is info on there, it means the device does have GPS.

Re: GPS and Verizon

Verizon is my carrier as well. Unless you buy the VZNavigator program, your GPS is not enabled. I have Google maps which will triangulate via cell phone towers, but it's only accurate from 300 to 5000 meters. There is one whale of a thread at Crackberry Forums regarding this, and one fellow has a petition going!

Hope this helps!

Re: GPS and Verizon

Bumble, I took a look at the Advance Options and they were two things listed

. GPS DATA SOURCE=DEVICE GPS (when I press the trackball it dispayed my laptop as one of the GPS sources)

. GPS SERVICES=911 ONLY (when I pressed the trackball it lists "location on")

Any idea?

Thanks,

Jay

Just means that when you make a 911 it will activate the gps so they can trace you - if you change it to location on, you still the symbol will change to show it's sending info now....

If you download google maps, you can use the 'my location' which will find where you are within a 700-1000 meters because it pings the local cell towers to find you.

I hope this helps!
