Re: Help! Curve 9360 seems dead after installing OTA OS upgrade

[ Edited ]

Thanks for the tips. I'm pretty well versed in the android market but my daughter wanted a BB as all her friends use BBM, so I'm a bit out of my geek comfort zone here. :smileyhappy:

I gather from doing a bit of research that when I download the 7.1 update files, before I push it to the phone I should delete the vendor.xml files, in order to avoid causing problems with the carrier branding, is that correct advice?

The latest version listed in the specific Virgin Media UK section on the RIM site is 7.1.0.1133, whereas I gather that 7.1.0.1647 is now available for some (mostly USA) carriers - is there anything else carrier-specific (such as CDMA vs GSM radios, etc) in any specific carrier's build, or are they all generic apart from the vendor.xml file?

I'm also going to replace the supplied SD card with a bigger one (as the current one has occasional file corruption issues). Do any important system files reside on the card which need to be backed up, or will stuff just auto-generate when I format a new card on the phone? Pictures/music/etc are not an issue, I'll copy those back.

Re: Help! Curve 9360 seems dead after installing OTA OS upgrade

Hi andre

Its Good that you want to Upgrade to 7.1,Yes you are right the most important part is deleting those Vendor.XML files they create a lots of problem during manual upgrade if not deleted.

Regarding Carrier selection you can download any Carrier OS packages. Those OS Packs are developed by RIM and then forwarded to respective Carriers, but as I said you had to delete those Vendor .XML files.

Regarding Media Card yes you can replace your old media card with a new one with bigger card, 9360 can support upto 32 GB MicroSDHC Card. Yes your Old card might have some important data other then just music, videos or picture ,Like BBM Contacts or BBM Chat history . I don't know if your daughter had saved her Contacts on media card or not , So do a backup of your media card also, keep that Card safe if Contacts are stored there you can restore those BBM contacts from your Media card also after device upgrade.

Regarding your device Upgrade there are already some sticky thread available at the top of each Forum,You can also refer to that if you have any problem.but if you want you can try this way :

1.Locate your Carrier and Download the OS you desire from here and Install it in your PC or Laptop Carriers

  • (make sure you are downloading for the same model as you have )

2. Download and install the latest BlackBerry desktop software from here BlackBerry desktop software

  •     Then using desktop software perform your full backup of your device.

3.Search your C: drive for Vendor.xml and delete them, there may be one or two vendor.xml or even three for newer releases ( On your Pc change your folders option to show hidden files/folders )

:

  •     C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  •     C:\Users\Windows UserName\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

5. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader. (For 64-bit Vista or Windows 7, the path       will be C: > Program Files x86 > Common Files > Research In Motion > AppLoader) double click Loader.exe

Upgrade will continue then After Installation of New OS restore your backup from BlackBerry desktop

Software. If, during the process, your device shows  a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from your device and re-insert it ,don't do anything else it will  allow the install to continue.

I hope it will help.

Re: Help! Curve 9360 seems dead after installing OTA OS upgrade

Thanks. I've checked with her and BBM/What's App/etc history are not needed, although Contacts are. I'll check to see that her contacts are stored on the phone rather than the card (I assume this is an option within the app?) and then replace the card and let the system rebuild what it needs to and then copy her music and pics back.

The upgrade seems straight forward enough, so I'll download any latest version file from RIM (as Virgin only have the previous one listed) and remove the vendor.xml files before running the installer. I assume the manual phone backup is only a precaution, and the install process SHOULD backup/restore everything automatically anyway?

Re: Help! Curve 9360 seems dead after installing OTA OS upgrade

Hi  Andre

Yes Manual Backup is just an extra precautionary step, and I think you should do that. And Upgrading the Device Software is not so hard just take Care of those Vendor.XML files  and follow the on screen instructions.

So Go for it and let us know the result.
