Home page missing all icons, menu key does not pull up menu

[ Edited ]

Help!!

I just picked up this 8330 w/ Verizon a couple of weeks ago.  I made a folder on the main menu to put the games in.  It never worked right (icons were not there, menu key did not work inside the folder), so I was in the folder today, hit the "sym" button, and it pulled up a screen that asked if I wanted to delete the folder and move the applications up to the home screen, I thought.  I figured since the folder was not working right to begin with, I would hit that.  Now I'm either stuck in the folder with nothing in it, or the home screen is empty of icons.  And nothing happens when I push the menu key.  The only way I can switch applications is to hit a number, use the menu key from the phone area, and scroll down to "switch applications."  I'm a loss of how to proceed.  I already did a couple of hard resets (battery out), and that did not work.  The wallpaper is still there, but no icons, and no menu key.  Very frustrating.

Any ideas?

Re: Home page missing all icons, menu key does not pull up menu

I think I remember seeing a posit on here similar (having trouble finding it at the moment), but since we could get beyond the home screen we recommend to reload the OS on your phone.

So if you're willing to try that, do the following.

First download and install the Desktop Manager from here (4.6 without Media Manager is recommended): https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22

Next you can use the Backup and Restore feature present in the software to make a backup of all the data on your phone.

Next download and install the handheld software from here: http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

Afterwards try reloading the OS by connecting the device to your computer, open the Desktop Manager, then go into the Application Loader. This will open a wizard that steps you through reloading the OS onto your device. More detailed steps can be found here:

Re: Gave that a whirl- still no icons

Hi,

Can you get to Options via a number?

Try changing themes, put the icons back in a folder and switch back.

I have a folder with icons, but I'm not brave enough to try and duplicate it :smileyhappy:

Let us know,

Thanks

[ Edited ]

Please post by reply and put the verbiage in the post, OK?

You said you could switch applications by number, have you tried two digits?

Does any of the letter keys change apps or icons?

In the "phone area" can you get to general options and turn off or on dial from home screen?

Other than that I agree with JMRMB80, your going to have to reload the OS.

Let us know,

Thanks

Edit: Just tried to duplicate the error, it didn't occur. I'm on OS 4.5 Your version? (if you know it)

Re: What number would I try?

Hi,

I've been to four different forums, all had your problem, all had to reload the OS.

Check on Google.

Sorry.

Step #1

Before starting make sure that BlackBerry Desktop Software is installed on the computer.

Step#2

Make sure that you have installed updated device software installed in your PC. Check this link to get update device software from carrier OS download site.

Step#3

Users can perform a full or selective backup of the data using the Backup and Restore tool in BlackBerry Desktop Manager by completing the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer running BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  3. Double-click Backup and Restore.
  4. Select Backup to perform a full backup or select Advanced to perform a backup of specific databases.
  5. Choose a location to save the backup file, then click Save.

Step#4

To perform a clean install of the BlackBerry Device Software, perform the following steps:

  1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Double-click the Application Loader icon.
  3. Click Next to start the installation process.
  4. Type your BlackBerry smartphone password, if prompted, and click OK.
  5. Click the check boxes next to the names of the applications you want to load, and then click Next.
  6. Click Advanced, and then click the check box beside Erase all currently installed applications.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click the check box next to Do not automatically backup the application data during the loading process.
  9. Clear the box next to Backup and restore applications installed wirelessly.
  10. Click Next > Finish.
  11. When the process has completed, the message The loading operation was successful will appear. Click Close to return to BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
