well...it worked.  not the very first time probably bc i didnt erase all of the items.  so i cleared the log and then ran selection 2 again and sure enough another file showed up.  when i finally got all deleted the phone rebooted as it usually does...that in and of itself is a miracle.

I now have it plugged in and doing its first back up of what info is still there and then doing the update.  I do have to say i lost my data anyways though.
