Laptop connectivity and back up software

Although my laptop physically connects to my blackberry curve 8520 via USB connection (evidence is the usual 'ding'), the desktop software (version 4.6.1.314) simply stalls. ('connecting' message circling in bottom right hand corner).  I've tried this on 2 laptops and with another version of the backup software (version 5.0.1.42).  Each time more or less the same result - inital "ding" then nothing. Is there some setting that needs to be set in bby first?

Also, check that you are using only root USB ports...no hubs (sometimes the front-side ports are hubs...use a rear USB port). And make sure to try disabling USB power management in your system configuration (Device Manager).

Also check on conflicting software...it has been reported that the software package NTI Shadow&Ninja can cause a conflict; removing them and reinstalling the BB desktop software allows it to install correctly.

Apologies in advance if this is redundant -- there's no way to be sure if you've already seen and tried these. Also apologies if any are not presently available...RIM takes them up and down at will as they revise things.

Thanks for suggestions. After several hours exploring, I believe the problem is due to a very old version of the o/s (4.X) that is incompatible with download software.

Old OS? As in the laptop OS? Or the Desktop Software version? But, in any event, yes compatibility between the two (Laptop OS and Desktop Software version) would be required...
