After a certain number of failed attempts (usually 5), it begins to display your password in "clear text" as an aid to your entering it correctly. Sadly, with only one try left, you must get it right...there is no "master" nor "override" password to otherwise unlock your BB. Only successfully entering the password you created will unlock it, and failure will wipe your device clean. There are a number of things to try, but with only one try left, you will need to be very lucky indeed, as you can select only one of these to attempt, and there is no way for anyone to actually guide you as to which would be "best" for you to try.

You can try a reboot...sometimes the keyboard gets stuck into some mode, and a reboot might put it back to defaults, allowing you to enter it properly:

  • Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.

If you have ever before connected your BB to your computer, and have successfully entered your password there, then do that now. The counter of attempts is the same for both, so if you succeed this way, you will have your maximum quantity of new tries (default is 10) via the device keyboard.

What normally happens is that you've got a mixture of different characters in your device password, and perhaps have not noticed how you must enter those on the BB keyboard. For instance, if your password is

  • ab123

and you enter

  • a > b > ALT > 1 > 2 > 3

the actual result will be

  • ab1er

You must enter

  • a > b > ALT > 1 > ALT > 2 > ALT > 3

in order to wind up with ab123. So, in this example, while on the BB keyboard you think you are typing ab123, you are actually typing ab1er.

Good luck!
