Is there a way to soft reset the BB apart from taking out the battery?

Sorry to report that removing the battery IS the soft reset.

Try Soft Reset: 0.2 - a tiny program to do just that!  Use your BlackBerry's Browser to download and install it OTA (Over The Air) from here:

hello,

Hard Reset : remove the battery for a minute, then plug it back and wait 5min for the Blackberry to initialize
Soft Reset : Alt + RightShift + Del then wait for 10seconds.

Naturally, the hard reset does more cleaning than the soft reset.
