I just received the Curve 8330 and have registered the phone and email. I had an older Blackberry and my outlook 2003 address book and calendar synced perfectly using desktop manager. I installed the latest version that came on cd-rom with the curve and the install was successful. I then tried to configure the sync and tried to apply the sync with ms outlook and that is when the problem occurred.
1. I opened the Desktop Manager and clicked on synchronization.
2.I clicked on the top tab labeled configuration
3. I then clicked configure synchronization.
4. Then selected address book
5. Next page listed available desktop applications and I chose MS Outlook
6. Then I choose the two way sync
7. After clicking next I receive this RUN TIME ERROR : The Application's Section is not File-Based.
I attempted to unistall the desktop manager and reinstalled from the blackberry website. Still I received the same message. Then I found the link below and found that there are conduits that link the outlook to the desktop manager and for some reason there is an error occurring there. I could not quite understand how to resolve the issue based on directions provided on the troubleshooting link. I could not add the link that was interrupted or lost by installing the new Desktop Manger. The link I found is below and I was wondering if there was a way to manually link the Desktop and Outlook. Please provide a way that novice computer person can implement.

Here is a rundown of what you need to do (a translation of the KB article you linked)
Windows XP - go to start, run and type cmd
Windows Vista - go to start, programs, accessories, right-click command prompt and select run as adminstrator
In the command line window type the following:
cd "\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector"
regsvr32 -u ilxolkCompanion.fil
cd "\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\MS Outlook Connector"
regsvr32 msoutlookconnector.fil
Cheers!

You are the Man!
Thanks for the help. The Verizon Wireless tech support was clueless.

I tried this fix since Im having the same problem and Im not sure if Im typing it in right, the cmd prompt tells me it cant find the path. Yes I checked spelling and tried upper case and lower case. Do I type " cd"\program files... "? For some reason I am just not able to navigate to the C drive
This is my first Blackberry so Im not sure why I would need to remove previous registry entries anyway. Frustrating either way.
Thanks

Hi Bolder,
I see you know how to make these things work. I have a problem similar to the one below, except that during the configuration stage my Desktop Manager won't even show me Outlook as an application to sync with. It will show me Outlook Express as an option for syncing with the address book, but not MS Outlook 2003 for calendar, mail, tasks, addresses etc. Should I try the same commands you offered below?

I have a Pearl 8100 and have just downloaded Desktop Tools 4.7 (not had a blackberry or any software before)
On attempting to synchronise Outlook I also get this run time error saying this section's application is not file based but when I try to un register the old Microsoft Connector into the Command prompt I get 'C:\Program' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
The file is there in the RIM folder because I can see it. How can I get the command prompt to navigate to it?

Bolder,
Thank you for the fix. I did notice that the first " is in the wrong place and fixed that and the correction fixed the outlook connector issue.
The corrected process to run from the command promt as an administrator is below. Again, thanks for saving me lots of time and frustration.
Windows XP - go to start, run and type cmd
Windows Vista - go to start, programs, accessories, right-click command prompt and select run as adminstrator
In the command line window type the following:
cd \"Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector"
regsvr32 -u ilxolkCompanion.fil
cd \"Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\MS Outlook Connector"
regsvr32 msoutlookconnector.fil

it would be easier to just type:
cd c:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Connectors\MS Outlook Connector
regsvr32 -u ilxolkCompanion.fil
cd c:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\IS71 Connectors\MS Outlook Connector
regsvr32 msoutlookconnector.fil
no need for quotes

This worked for me. Just cut and paste all of the text from bklugh into the command prompt.
I recently upgraded to a Storm with software version 4.7 from an 8830.
Much appreciation, bklugh.
