I just received an 8520 model as a gift. Once I get a sim card for it, I'll be able to use it. Yesterday the Trackpad worked just fine, today it doesn't. Does anyone have a clue what the problem is.

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Best!

Thanks for the welcome and for a quick answer to my query. I did try the hard reboot that you suggested. Unfortunately, the Trackpad still does not work. I haven't bought a sim card for it yet because I want to make sure it works correctly before I spend money on it.

Further, if you wish to keep trying to diagnose for yourself, then I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:
It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.
If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.
If the behavior continues, then you may want to consider more drastic recovery attempts. However, from what you describe, the root cause could well be hardware (e.g., physical damage, water damage, etc.) for which no amount of software nor internet-distance diagnosis can help.
Good luck and let us know!

well. i'm all ears as to what the 'escape' key is on the qwerty board. i'm thinking that i'll get another curve and use this one for spare parts. I do wanna thank you for reaching out and giving an old cowboy some strategic advice.

Again, I say 'mad props' to you and all other techs that have given me great instructions and ideas for elliminating my bb problem. Using the 'back' button as an escape key, didn't see that one coming!!
