Using WIFI abroad without paying roaming charges

Hi

Sorry for asking a stupid question !!

I'm trying to work out if I can use the WIFI on my curve 8900 without being charged roaming in USA.

I have spoken to O2 and they said I will get charged regardless of using the WIFI or roaming, even if I switch off the roaming data services.

I have tried using the phone without the SIM in to connect to the WIFI and it wont work.

I then tried going into the 'manage connections' and 'unticking' the Mobile Network and I could then connect to the WIFI.  is there any way if I am not connected to a mobile network that my phone can be charged?  I am guessing that if I'm not connected I can't be charged - however O2 are telling me I will.

Thanks in advance

Re: Using WIFI abroad without paying roaming charges

You shouldn't be charged with the mobile network off.

You can turn off Mobile Network so the BlackBerry will only access through Wi-Fi.  Basically, if your Wi-Fi icon is White, you are connected using Wi-Fi.  You can also verify this by going into Manage Connections and choosing Services Status.

I won't guarantee you won't be charged, I know in the same circumstance other carriers do not charge.
