To check your OS, go to options-about; 3rd line down will read v4.x.x.xxx
I came over from a Treo 650 and love my Curve and I have done very little customization myself. So far I like it just the way it is. Things are a little different Palm vs BB, but you're gonna love the change. Glad you found us and keep coming back.

Device OS levels are released by the carriers for their supported versions. Find that here:
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/dow
Anything beyond your carriers supported version is playing in leak/beta land.
To check your device OS level, see this:
Homescreen > Options > About
On the third line displayed, will be something like this:
v4.7.0.148 (Platform 4.0.0.181)
The first set (v) is the OS level, so I am on the .148 release of the 4.7 version (current for my device/carrier).
As for apps...well, that's a total subjective judgement. Install AppWorld and see what you find:
