First, because AIM is a buggy, bad application on the BlackBerry.
You might try JiveTalk.

I had it working on my 8310 with AT&T using the OZ client. That no longer works- connection error or something. It only became an issue recently when I was getting the IM notifier using the 'contentment' sound. Couldn't figure out what was going on. I figured it was the IM trying to notify me of something. Unfortunately- no icon to say what was trying to get me. When I went to log in to my AIM- no soap...
But what irks me is if the AIM no longer works, then how did I get the notifier that I had an IM wating?!!!
and the compatability listings that say Yahoo is good? nope- same error except it tells me that my device is not supported, blah, blah... resend service books, pull battery- nothin.
