highly unlikely you have a virus on your blackberry. Have you tried a battery pull?
Do any ringtones work? Are the ringtones stored on a SD card or the blackberry device memory? Just need some more details and what else you've tried so we can assist you.

the original ringtones which came with the phone are the ones that are missing and they were stored on the phone.
All the ringtones which are on the memory device are available and still work.
The ones which dont work, are still listed, but just dont play, and I get an error when I try to even sample them. and yes, I did try a battery pull.and when the phone starts up, I get a wierd error message which says:
"A Media Card has been inserted that contains encrypted files which will be unaccessible by this device. Please place the media Card in the original device to access those files."
The wierd thing about that is that I NEVER have encryption turned on!!

yes that is strange!
Can you see if encryption is turned on?
Options icon. Click Security > Encryption.
if it is, can you turn it off?

encryption is/and always has been turned off.....I just cannot figure it out!!!
This IS strange, isn't it?

We can try a few things here.
Can you enable mass storage mode then copy the files to a folder on your computer?
If you can get that done, now format the media card. disconnect BB from PC.
OS6:
Go into the Options menu on the BlackBerry smartphone
Go into Device
Go into Storage
Click on the BlackBerry menu key and select the option to Format
OS5:
On the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
Click Memory.
Press the Menu key.
Click Format.
Complete the instructions on the screen.
Reconnect to the PC and copy the files back over and retry. Something else... the files that you copied to the computer.. can you play them from the computer?

OK, .....
I have OS 6 installed on my BB, (so just to be clear, you want me to copy all the files from the media card to my PC and format the media card, then move back all the files to the media card?
Should I do this while the card is inside the phone? Or take it out of the phone???
and yes to your question regarding whether or not I can play the music files from the media card on my PC. I already copied all the files to an external hard (WD) drive attached to my PC and I was able to play all the music (mp3, mp4) and I could view/edit all the picture (jpg) files.
(BTW----PC is windows XP professional )
AND-Original problem of ringtones which were stored on the phone and would not play- corrected itself after I pulled the battery out to reboot phone a second time.
This encryption thing has me baffled.... I will try what you suggest regarding formatting of the media card once I am clear on exactly how you want me to do this...
Thanks so much

Thats exactly right, format the card in the phone then move the stuff back to it. maybe move a few items first to test...
You've already copied the files so give it a shot! The encryption has me baffled too.

I know this might sound like a simple-minded question, but how do I format the disk?
Do I use windows to format?
Thanks

No worries, see my post above on how to format the card on the device.
You can do it from the computer too if you want.
