icons & messages

i keep getting an icon at the top of the screen that looks like the App World icon with a red star on its right side. I've tried everything to get rid of it but can only do so by switching off & removing the battery.  Also my text messages are also being duplicated in the email message box.

can anyone help please?

Sometimes, that is indeed the resolution...sometimes icons get stuck. In any event, I surmise from your words that you are indeed all OK on this issue right now?

Please double check your setting that controls if SMS/MMS are included or excluded from the main Messages app. Try changing it back (e.g., if excluded now, change to included), reboot, then change it again, and reboot. See if things clear up.

Also, the method you are stating you use for rebooting is not the best...

  • Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: icons & messages

thanks for the advice but I'm no further forward.

I've read all thru the manual & looked on line but can't see how to set/adjust the controls for messages.

Also I've now had another strange icon appear, this one looks like a circle with an arrow thru it with the number one next to it.  Again I've looked all through but can't find the 2 strange icons I've had anywhere in the literature or in the on-line help.

sorry to be a pain but it's a tad frustrating.  Thanks a lot

Re: icons & messages

By default, all messages (email, SMS, BBM, etc.) are put into the main Messages icon/app. Some prefer this "unified messages" approach, others prefer to separate things. Fortunately, the BB provides the ability to split things out according to your desires.

On older OS levels (e.g., within and less than the OS5 level), there was very little control over this split...basically, just being able to split SMS/MMS out of Messages to an icon of their own (controlled by one of the Options settings within the Messages app). But, with later OS levels, more fine controls were provided:

For BES users, your BES Admin can push a BES-only email icon to your device. This solution is free, but must be conducted at the BES server, and will affect all users on that BES server.

  • KB15003 How to create a separate icon on the BlackBerry smartphone for only BlackBerry Enterprise Server messages

If your device OS level (starting within OS5 and above) has the option, you can dictate what shows in Messages:

  • Homescreen > Messages > blackberry_logo.jpg > Options > (Main Message List Settings) or (Inbox Settings) or (Inbox Management)
  • Uncheck what you want to suppress from Messages, enabling a separate icon for those you uncheck

Good luck!

Re: icons & messages

Sometimes, the icons are generated by a Message that needs to be dealt with...I suggest a message search:

  • KB21879How to search for unread messages on the BlackBerry smartphone

Good luck and let us know!
