sync problems

Hopefully someone can solve the following issue for me. I went on holiday in April with my BB Curve and went to a country without 3G (this may or may not have anything to do with it) Ever since I got back there seems to have been a sync problem on the handset with my pop account. Old emails that I have deleted from the handset but still exist in my email mailbox are reappearing on my handset randomly in huge swathes. Sometimes it happens twice a week. Sometimes it happens twice a month. Is there a way to solve this without having to do a full reinstall of the software on the handset? If so I'd love to know. It's really irritating!
