wi-fi problem (newbie to Blackberry)

I have a 8320.  At home I have no problem connecting to my secured wi-fi, Work is another problem.  At work we have a UNSECURED access router.  I can be standing next to the router and the curve says there is no network??  My iphone finds it with no problem!!  Other staff can access the wifi from across the building.  I'm confused.... please help!!!
