Re: How do I get old OS back

1. Delete the newer OS from your PC by going to Control Panel >Add/Remove Programs. (If you never physically installed the OS to your PC, skip to step 2.)

2. Then download and install the older version of the OS. BlackBerry Operating System Downloads

3. Install the older OS to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
4. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
5. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

Re: How do I get old OS back

That doesn't work for me.  I have installed version 5 desktop software on my PC, and followed the link to the OS 5 download page. But that won't download OS 5 - it will only offer me upgrades to the installed v6 OS.

I really want to go back to OS.5. Please help!

You want this file:

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.1602 (EastAsia)

Package Version: 5.0.0.1602
Consisting of:

  • Applications: 5.0.0.977
  • Software Platform: 6.3.0.63
  • File name: 9300jEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel1602_PL6.3.0.63_A5.0.0.977_StarHub_Ltd.exe
  • File size: 131.6MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

At this link: https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=5807A685D1A9AB3B599035BC566CE2B9

Select the 9300 model and scroll down to the second from the bottom download link, for the OS file I have described above, then follow my directions in my earlier post above.

Re: How do I get old OS back

Thanks very much for that. I have seen the listings of firmware packaged for various service providers, but was cautious about using one in case the appearnce was branded of modified in some way. I bought the phone unlocked and unbranded. How does is the version you mention different to the non-branded one? Is it limited in any way?

Re: How do I get old OS back

There are no "un-branded" versions (that I know of).

If the OS release is the same OS release number for Platform, and Software apps... they are the same.

The ONLY difference might be the carrier themes included in the release, and the languages offered.

Re: How do I get old OS back

I'm conscious of the fact that with many phones bought through a service provider/carrier they have branded sceens and modified software, and with specific access settings.

By unbranded what I meant is that it has just the basic BB programs and nothing else.

I'll go ahead and try it. If the worst comes to the worst I can always go back to OS6.

Thanks again for you help.

Re: How do I get old OS back

Ok. I am not 'conscious' of that, after many many years of using and troubleshooting BlackBerry issues.

RIM only offers the device operating software through the mobile providers. The way to 'unbrand' the software is to delete the 'vendor.xml' file on the PC after installing the OS to the PC.

You'll still have the flash start up screen for the original carrier when turning on the device, that can't be changed even after being unlocked from that provider.

I think you'll be fine.

Re: How do I get old OS back

Thanks for the hint. I don't get any start-up flash apart from the BB one, as the phone was never locked to a carrier.
