How to find out my device software version?

It looks stupid as a question but I inquired the version on my Blackberry 9550.

the answer is: v5.0.0.517 (platform

So is the OS version 5.0 or it is the platform 4.2 that classify the OS as 4.2?

I tried upgrading to higher version of OS but Blackberry Desktop is indicating that I have the higher version installed.

OS versions are 4 octets...your OS level is, which means you are in the 5.0 range, on the specific .517 level. The Platform information is not meaningful to the question.

When comparing your OS to other sources, be sure to be comparing like information. If you are, for instance, looking at the official download portal, you would be comparing to the information in the "Applications" component about a particular OS package.

Good luck!
