Issues with Blackberry 7.1 Update Download

My download to my Blackberry was interrupted and now the 7.1 update to my Blackberry Torch 9810 will not finish. It tells me there is an error. What can I do?

Re: Issues with Blackberry 7.1 Update Download

Hello,

It is unfortunate you did not reveal more details. For instance, I can quickly think of 5 different methods to attempt an OS update, 1 of them on the device directly and the others using a computer/USB connection. The specifics would help to better understand your situation. Further, "there is an error" is likely not the full and complete content of the error message you are presented with...with thousands of possibilities, "there is an error" prevents any useful guessing for your situation.

Nevertheless, I'll make a guess...

There are two methods of recovery for you to try:

One:

  • Open Blackberry Desktop Software & Connect your device with PC using USB cable, without inserting battery.
  • You will get three option Retry, Update Or Cancel, then click on update.
  • Once it is to the stage of the update "initializing handheld", then insert battery.
  • If this does not work, and you remain stuck on the backing up the Social Feeds database, go to the second method below.

Secondly:

  • Start your BlackBerry in Safe mode.  Article ID: KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Modehttp://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB17877
  • Connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Software and allow your handheld to connect. If you are prompted to upgrade, cancel the upgrade for later.
  • IF you cannot connect or your Desktop Software does not recognize your device while in Safe Mode, please follow the directions here to force the detect:  Article ID: KB10144 How to force the detection of the BlackBerry smartphone using Application Loader
  • Go to Device > delete > SELECT DATA > select to delete both the Social Feeds and Smart Card databases, and follow the remaining prompts to complete it.
  • Now, you can return and click to upgrade the device through the Desktop Manager, or reboot the BlackBerry in normal mode and continue the over the air upgrade.

Re: Issues with Blackberry 7.1 Update Download

I experienced a similar problem with my BB Bold 9900.   During the upgrade process using Desktop Manager the device backup got stuck and the Desktop Manager indicated an updated file was needed.  I approved the software update to Desktop Manager and following a pc restart I had significant problems getting the 7.1.0 Bundle 1997 software loaded onto the phone.  When I did get the process to finish I discovered that the backup must have become corrupted and all of my contacts have been lost.  I have performed semi-regular backups before and am sure that a file exists on my pc which has 95% or more of the contacts and would be happy if I could restore those files.  Will I have to uninstall the current software and reinstall the 7.0 product or is there a device available that i can use to restore the now empty contact list?  Any help you can offer would be much appreciated.

Hello,

To restore, I believe you must use a version of Desktop Software that is compatible with the file format of the backup file you wish to use as restore source. Given that they changed the format of the backup file from IPD to BBB, you would need to fall back to an IPD-level of the Desktop Software if the file you with to use as source of restore is of that format. You can find old versions here:

Good luck!
