Japanese font on Blackberry Bold 9780

How can I write in Japanese on my phone? No option comes up even after I've installed the "Japanese characters and font support"

Re: Japanese font on Blackberry Bold 9780

Hello,

Please start here:

  • KB05305Localization support for BlackBerry smartphones

If, per that KB, an OS package exists for the language and capabilities you desire, then you can proceed. If not, well, then what you desire is simply not available.

If it is available, then it is a matter of using the information from that KB as you proceed, and installing the proper OS package to your BB, ensuring that you select the proper language options (usually there are two of them during the OS install) during the install. Then, after it is installed, you activate the language you desire within the main Settings of the BB device.

For the OS loading, the simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):

1) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages

2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

4) Delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

5) Launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC. If, during the process, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.

Don't forget to backup.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Japanese font on Blackberry Bold 9780

During the fifth step, when I launch the Desktop Software and connect my BB the software doesn't offer me the OS package I installed to my PC.

Re: Japanese font on Blackberry Bold 9780

That result is typically due to one (or more) of the following:

  1. The OS package you installed to your PC is exactly the same that is already running on your BB
  2. You have more than one BB OS package installed to your PC
  3. You have no BB OS packages installed to your PC
  4. The BB OS package you have installed is for a different model number BB
  5. The BB OS package you have installed came from a different carrier, and you did not properly delete all copies of VENDOR.XML during step 4

Please carefully triple check all of those.

Good luck!

Oh, it's the exact same one as the one that is currently on my BB. I had deleted some of the languages that were intalled on my phone when I got it thinking that I wouldn't need them, but now I do.

Ahhhh...OK...then you need a different process, one that allows you to reload what is existing...from a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC.

I tried that but it didn't work.
On the desktop manager I check the Japanese input thing and it installs onto my phone but it just doesn't seem to come up under the languages option whenever I try to change it.

Re: Japanese font on Blackberry Bold 9780

If I recall, there is more than one place that you need to click in AppLoader. I don't recall the names of the sections/items, but I recall that there were two that were needed.

I also recall from some other members here that, for unknown reasons, the OS package they were using simply would not load and operate their chosen language properly. They had to switch to a different OS package, from a different carrier, and that finally worked for their situation.

Good luck!
