No OTA software update availability

I bought a Bold 9930 from a big store that sells unclaimed baggage from airlines. I bought the phone and then unlocked it for T-Mobile. I sent service books and even called T-Mobile, but I still cannot use BIS. I looked in the phone options for Software Update and cannot find it anywhere. I cannot load any other versions in DM because nothing shows up. It is running 7.1 Bundle 457. I have a feeling I bought a locked down business model. Can I reload a normal OS?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

There is no difference in OS for a "business model" versus anything else. It's all a matter of the service plan your carrier delivers to the BB from their system. So changing the OS is unlikely to solve your issues. But the reason nothing is coming up is likely due to the VendorID of the device...depending on who that is, if you don't do any "tricks" (or you only check the wireless update), you are limited to whatever that carriers supported OS packages are...if they are only supporting the version you are running, that could explain why there is no offer for anything else. I'm only making an educated guess here, as I can't see anything but what you've said in your post.

 

But, if you want to proceed with trying to load a different OS, that is of course possible...if you use the correct tricks. Let us know if you wish to do that, and we'll provide you the process.

 


 

Anyway, I rather think that your problem has more to do with your BB perhaps being an unsupported (on the TM network) BB model I do now know if TM natively supports your specific model, but if they don't, then there are some things that must happen for them to do so.

Any BB can be used on any carrier that runs the same radio frequencies that the BB is capable of (and I've no idea if your's are such). But, to bring a BB onto a carrier network that they did not sell to you, there are several hurdles to cross:

1) The carrier must say "yes" to the fact...they own their network and have every right to say what devices will be allowed to connect to it. If they say "no", then that's the end of it.

2) You must be sure that your BB is properly unlocked from it's originally manufactured-for carrier...see this helpful thread for details:

3) You must get all of your voice level services functioning on the carrier, before you even try anything about data

4) You must subscribe, from the carrier, to an adequate data plan to enable the BB-proprietary services you desire

5a) If the carrier directly supports your specific model BB, then you can proceed with registering the BB onto their network, generating the proper Service Book delivery to your BB, and proceeding to function.

5b) But, if the carrier does not directly support your specific model number of BB, then the challenges are much greater as most carrier systems will not deliver, to the BB, the necessary service books to enable the BB-proprietary data services, even if you do subscribe to them.

So, depending on all of that, your BB may or may not ever fully function on that carrier network. It can be quite tricky to accomplish, especially if 5b applies. So take a look at all of that and decide how you wish to proceed. Most folks wind up just buying a new BB if 5b applies.

 


 

Then again, if the BB has been reported as Lost or Stolen by the original owner, that can lock down the BB PIN from being assigned to BIS on any carrier system anywhere. Again, I can only give you an educated guess here as there is nowhere for me to check at all. To actually check that, you need to find someone with your carrier who is willing and able to do so.

While I don't use MAC, it is my understanding that the MAC Desktop Software can only offer you the BB OS packages supported by your carrier (as determined by the VendorID on the BB, not necessarily the carrier on which you operate the BB). All of the "tricks" to use a different carriers OS package require the use of a PC, as those tricks just don't work on MAC.
