Phone constantly restart after update to 4.5 firmware

I updated the firmware from 4.2 to 4.5 on my Blackberry 8800. After that, it constantly restart. If I press "back" key before "Loading programs" messages, sometimes work. But, few minutes later restart again.

If I connect the phone with my PC, it keep on and work fine, but if disconect it, constantly restart again.

Please, could you help me? How do I solve it? The phone is barely useable after the update. Is it possible to downgrade the firmware or reinstall?

Re: Phone constantly restart after update to 4.5 firmware

Hello dce,

Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums Smiley Happy

It sounds like there may be an issue with the device software or hardware. I would suggest getting access to a PC with your USB cable and device then attempt to reload the device software.

Try these steps first.

If you have issues getting the reload to begin, connect the device, go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and click on Loader.exe. (Make sure you have the latest device software downloaded and installed on the PC) Press next on the first wizard screen until it takes you to the connection screen. Next, pop the battery out of the device and reinsert it. If it comes up with PIN or PIN unknown click next and try to proceed through the application load.

If the software reload fails to resolve the issue you may need to contact your point of sale for replacement options.

Cheers!

Re: Phone constantly restart after update to 4.5 firmware

If your device is still having the issue after completing that process, reloading 4.2 will likely not resolve the issue for you. If you still want to reload 4.2 you will need to uninstall device software 4.5 from your computer and download/install a copy of 4.2 device software from your wireless provider's website. You will only be able to do this if your wireless provider still has 4.2 available for your device or if you have it installed on your PC already.

Cheers,

Re: Phone constantly restart after update to 4.5 firmware

The issue you are having is related the Media Card, when upgrading from OS 4.2 to 4.5. It is pretty well documented.

The Media Card contains thumbnail.dat files which are formatted for OS 4.2, and are not compatible with OS 4.5, and will cause constant rebooting, scanning of the media card, etc.

The workaround is detailed below, if you desire to upgrade again to OS 4.5 (I would, there is no reason you shouldn't).

Read this on how fix the Media Card (courtesy of John Clark, another expert here in the Forum):

1. Removed the Media Card from the device and put in a card reader. This makes the rest of the process much quicker. However, you can do it with the card in the device.

2. Copy the entire contents of the card to your PC.

3. Put the card back in the device and go to Options >Media Card >Menu key >Format Card. This will wipe the card and reformat it. (if using a card reader remove the card and put it back in the reader.)

4. Now copy back JUST the media to the device. Do NOT copy back any "BBthumbs.dat" files or any system files. I went through the entire folder and deleted every .dat file before copying the contents of the music folder and pictures folders back to the device. The device will recreate these files. Also, I didn't copy the actual "music" folder but rather just copied the contents and pasted in the card's \Blackberry\music folder. Do this for each folder.

5. When finished put the card back in the device and try the Media App again. It should scan for music. If you have lots of music it can take 5-10 minutes. During scanning you can open the Music app and you should be able to see the songs moving around in the list as the device scans

If after transferring all your files back you still get a stuck scanning bar or device reboots then you have a conflicting file on the card. I've seen video files do this but it could be a music file too or (less likely) a picture file. Remove all the files you transferred and see if the reboots stop. Then add back each folder one at a time to see if you can narrow down to the folder that's causing it. Once you find the folder then you can narrow down to a particular file.

Re: Phone constantly restart after update to 4.5 firmware

Wow  - you would think if this has been known for 2 years they would have found a fix by now.  After changing  to 4.5 mine constantly showed the dreaded hourglass, and voice dialing claimed not enough memory.  Copied the stuff on the media card, formatted it and shazaam!  Everything works
