Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

Hi,

What icon is it listed with? A calendar or a BBM icon?

I have seen partial or failed installations that leave a module for a BBM groups calendar.

Thanks,

Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

I'd ask you to install BBMessenger from your browser

 www.blackberry.com/messenger

REboot the device With the BlackBerry device powered ON, remove the battery a few seconds and then reinsert the battery to reboot.

Now, return to Options > Advanced > Applications > Addon, and delete.

Does that work?

Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

I have confirmed seperately that the method outlined by JSanders should work to resolve this issue.  This is one of the options that others have used to remove BBM on their devices.

Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

Thanks, that worked a treat.

For reference, when I donloaded messenger and installed messenger, I was aksed "replace version 5.0.0 with 5.0.0.57"  Thats 5.0.0, no 4th digit(s)

Kudos to JSanders

It's great that there is a solution indeed.

For further reference, even though many screens (install, package ID, etc.) may refer to only 3 (and often only 2) octets, there are always 4 octets. They are visible in either DTM AppLoader or the installed application list on the BB.

Cheers!

Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

I had same issue - BBM was in Core section, could not delete it. Followed JSanders's directions (8/28/2010) and finally BBM is gone. Thank you!

Re: Removing Blackberry Messenger

[ Edited ]

I registered specifically to thank JSanders and give him / her kudos for the post above explaining how to deal with the BlackBerry Messenger issue, which has been driving me nuts for a while now.  BBM was draining my battery in a matter of just a few hours (overnight while I slept!), where before I updated my OS and had the eternal BBM problem it took 2.5 to 3 days of typical (for me) use to reach the same level of battery drain.

Thank you SO much for this solution!  :smileyvery-happy:

As this is an on-going problem I thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

There is a more permanent solution to the BBM problem. By completing JSanders' instructions you will remove the beast from your phone, but every time you connect to Blackberry Desktop Manager it will try to force a re-install. To remove Blackberry Messenger permanently follow these instructions carefully:

1. Close BDM if you have it open.

2. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\[Your Blackberry Version].

3. Find Blackberry.alx and open it in notepad.

4. Search for "messenger". You should find a tag reading "net.rim.java.blackberrymessenger". Underneath this you will find a bunch of tags telling messenger what it can and can't do.

5. Scroll to the bottom of these and find the set of "required" tags. (You can also just do another search for “required” and it should find the next one.) Just make sure that the tag above it has “Blackberry Messenger” in it. In between these tags is the word "true".

6. Change this word to false

7. Save as an alx file to your desktop and close notepad. (If you try to save it directly it'll tell you that the file is in use by another program, but after you close notepad you can delete it without any problems.)

8. Go back in to the above folder and replace the old blackberry.alx file with the new one.

9. Now you can treat BBM as if it were an add-on application.

~Life sometimes takes you where you don't want to go...instead of fighting it, roll with it and you will be out in no time.
