Lost with cutover migration process :-(

Hello,

Hope you can help!

Current situation: BES 4.1.7 for Exchange, Win2k3

Just purchased the upgrade license for 5.0.4.

Our plan is to install a new server in the same domain, on Win2K8 R2.

I am slightly lost with the configuration databases: referring to http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/7125/BESX_Upgrade_Guide.pdf

Ideally I would like to have both servers running in parallel and move users from one server to the other. But I do not understand if I need to upgrade the configuration database or not? Or if I need  to create a new one for the BES 5 server, and use the transporter utility to move users from 4.1.7 to 5.0.4?

I have read so many pages that now I am completely lost :-)

Thanks for your help!

Re: Lost with cutover migration process :-(

problem is you have only one SRP that needs to be upgraded with the special CAL they sent you.

how many user do you have?

do you run a full SQL server or use MSDE or SQL express?

Re: Lost with cutover migration process :-(

I have around 160 users.

Full SQL server.

I cannot do an upgrade in place (I want to change the OS and hardware... and do not want to upgrade Win2K3 to Win2K8... I like fresh installs, like many others :-)).

Can you please tell me if this upgrade scenario would be the correct/"best" one?

Fresh new Win2K8R2 install.

BES 5.0.4 on this machine, new configuration database on SQL server, using the current 4.1.7 router which is in a DMZ, using temp SRP from trial version.

Recreate policy on the 5.0.4.

Use the transporter tool to move users from 4.1.7.

When everybody has been moved, stop 4.1.7 and reassign SRP key to new server.

What about CALs licences? Can you confirm they are assigned to the domain, not to the server?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Lost with cutover migration process :-(

I am not sure if the temp SRP will allow you to use your CALS

usually you need to use the special CAL they sent to upgrade the SRP for use with 5.SP3

then fail over to new hardware and install SP4

Here is most of the documentation you need will to install and administer the BB 5.0 server:

Re: Lost with cutover migration process :-(

Thanks for the information.

I was reading this post too:

http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Enterprise-Service-10/Migrate-from-BES-4-1-2-20-to...

Maybe this can be a _better_ solution?

Inplace upgrade, install a new server for high availability and move ressources from one node to the other node, then decommission the upgraded server.

Thanks a lot for your advice(s)!
