BES (ver5) is new in our environment (approximately 6 months) and we have about 70 BlackBerry Curve 8330's which I would like to start updating wirelessly.

I am having a hard time finding specific information for device updates. There is quite a bit related to pushing out apps, but each reference seems to refer to comments that 'device updates are slightly different'.

All that we are concerned about at the moment is updating the device SW, from version 4.5.077   to  4.5.0.177, and leaving all current apps on devices in place.

Can anyone provide a link or detailed instructions on the exact steps required to perform this?

What you've heard is true. There is a slight difference in how device OS updates are done vs. application installs.

In the case of wireless applications installs (we call them software configurations) you would provide the BES with the necessary files for an application. The BES would then encapsulate them and deliver them to the device, which would then install the app.

In the case of wireless software upgrades, the device software is not actually sent from the BES, but from a Wireless Software Upgrade infrastructure out in the wireless network cloud. When a BESAdmin desires, he can initiate an update request on behalf of the device. Of course, if your IT policy will allow it, the users can request the upgrades on their own. This will cause the device to request an upgrade from the infrastructure and upgrade accordingly...

...the catch is that the service provider has to have made the software upgrade available to its customers. This varies across carriers and models.
