New BESx 5.0.2 install, Dispatcher service errors and won't start.

Blackberry Dispatcher BESExpress service does not start automatically. When I try to start it manually I get 3 application event log errors:

This is a new BESx 5.0.2 installation on an SBS2008 server with Exchange 2007. In the installation I elected all components and a separate install of SQL 2005 Express. All BB services are under the BESAdmin account I created in the pre-installation. All other automatic BB services are running. No manual BB services are running.

I can log in to BAS.

Thanks,

Joe M

Re: New BESx 5.0.2 install, Dispatcher service errors and won't start.

There is no MAGT log. I see ALRT, ASMN, BAA, BBAS-AS, BBAS-NCC, CTRL, DBNS, DISP, MDAT, MDSS-AC, and ROUT; but no MAGT.

I don't see any related events other than those in the original post.

[ Edited ]

Add-on information.

Something random appeared to be happening. I restarted the server twice overnight. The first time all services started, but I got a slew of warnings. The second time all services started with less complaint.

Could this relate to BESx's use of hard-wired port numbers and not doing anything to prevent Windows Server assigning the ports to other services? If so, how do I tell? How to I find out what ports are hard-wired in? How do I tell Windows not to assign them?

Here are the BESx related events after the last restart.

Re: New BESx 5.0.2 install, Dispatcher service errors and won't start.

I don't believe that it is a SQL binding issue, but my knowledge is minimal:

1) I can log into BAS. I believe that BAS queries the DB on SQL(BLACKBERRY) to validate the logon. I don't know if other BESx services get at SQL differently.

2) The symptoms can vary after restart. I would guess that a SQL binding problem would be constant.

The I don't find any help in the cited article:

1) My BESx is 5.0.2 and not 4.1 to 4.6 in the article.

2) I cannot find any 5613 events.

3) I cannot find Application log events all that similar to the other events shown in the article.

4) The Blackberry Dispatcher *32 service is listening on 0.0.0.0:5096

5) The HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders key has AppData with the value "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming" (which I believe is the correct value for Windows Server 2008 rather than the "%USERPROFILE%\Application Data" in the article.

Is my reasoning correct or am I missing something?

Re: New BESx 5.0.2 install, Dispatcher service errors and won't start.

[ Edited ]

SBS 2008 becomes very unhappy if you disable IPv6. (See http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2008/10/24/issues-after-disabling-ipv6-on-your-nic-on-sbs-200... ).

I presume that you are suggesting to turn Receive Side Scaling off. It is already disabled. From netsh:

TCP Global Parameters
----------------------------------------------
Receive-Side Scaling State          : disabled
Chimney Offload State               : disabled
Receive Window Auto-Tuning Level    : disabled
Add-On Congestion Control Provider  : none
ECN Capability                      : disabled
RFC 1323 Timestamps                 : disabled

Are these things that cause random problems on restart? Do they cause Dispatcher to not run sometimes and run other times?

Thanks,

Joe M

Yes RSS and IPV6 can do weird things.

maybe time for a call, let us know what they find.
