BES10 Components - What’s Different?

[ Edited ]

New Components in BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10

BlackBerry Licensing Service

  • With the release of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 version 10.1 service pack 1 (BES10.1.1), a new licensing back end is integrated with the management console. Its primary purpose is communicating with the Licensing Service and validating licensing.

BlackBerry Management Studio

  • The Management Studio provides simplified management of all MDM domains within your organization. It supports basic MDM tasks such as activating devices, assigning users to groups, or managing user accounts for iOS devices, Android devices, BlackBerry 10 smartphones, BlackBerry PlayBook tablets, and BlackBerry 7.1 or earlier smartphones. Complete functionality is available in the native console for each platform.

BES10 Self-Service

  • BES10 Self-Service is a web-based application used to perform basic user tasks, such as creating activation passwords, sending device commends, locking a lost or stolen device, etc. BES10 Self-Service replaces the BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager of BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.

Enterprise Management Web Service

  • EMWS is a set of web services that communicates commands, configuration information, VPN profiles, Wi-Fi profiles, SCEP profiles, and email profiles between the BAS and the Enterprise Management Agent on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone. EMWS replaces the Policy and Synchronization services in BES 5.

BlackBerry Device Service console

  • BDS manages BlackBerry PlayBook tablets and BlackBerry 10 smartphones. Sample BDS tasks include user administration, group assignment, role assignment, and profile assignment. BDS operates similarly to the BAS in BES 5.

Universal Device Service console

  • UDS manages iOS and Android devices. Sample UDS tasks include user account management, IT policies creation, profile assignment, application packaging, etc. UDS is a graphical drag and drop environment.

Core Module

  • Core Module manages the configurations used to manage iOS and Android devices, for example, user, group, and device configurations, or policy enforcement. This service is the equivalent of the EMWS service in BDS. It also uses multiple external components as shown in the Architecture and Data Flow Overview (PDF) document.

Communication Module

  • This module is the gateway between iOS devices/Android devices and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. Its main responsibility is to convert between the device’s proprietary protocols and the device-agnostic format used by the Core Module.

BlackBerry Work Connect Notification

  • This web service is responsible for providing new or changed email and PIM notifications to iOS devices and Android devices using Secure Work Space (SWS).

BlackBerry Secure Connect Service

  • BlackBerry Secure Connect Service provides secure connectivity from behind the corporate firewall to iOS devices and Android devices.
