Blackberry Device Service - Playbook Activation

Im having difficulties activating a Playbook after successfully installing BDS and adding an account. I'm using our existing BES service account so this is not an Exchange permissions issue. I am able to manually add an Active Sync account to the Playbook

Originally I had installed both BDS and Fusion. But upon having the aforementioned problem and not able to resolve it, I un-installed both and re-installed only BDS. But the same exact issue exists. After adding an account to BDS and successfully logging into the Web Desktop Mgr, I plug in the Playbook for a wired activation and get an error:

"The BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager is unable to complete this action. Please contact your administrator for more information."

I've checked the BDS server logs, but have not found a smoking gun.

Has anyone overcome this (I've seen many similar posts)?

Re: Blackberry Device Service - Playbook Activation

We had some problems with playbook activation and windows firewall.  As a test, disable the windows firewall on the computer to which you are connecting the playbook, and try the activation again.

Thank you for you reply.

Firewall is off via GPO on all our Windows Workstations and Servers.

Re: Blackberry Device Service - Playbook Activation

DOH!

OK, first things first . . . it was the Windows Firewall.

I double checked our Group Policy and found it only turns off the firewall for "Domain networks". I put my machine into a special 'No GPO' OU we have for testing and manually turned off Windows Firewall for Domain, Private, and Public networks. Plugged the Playbook back in and it activated!!! Yay!

Here's what the Windows firewall connection status showed during the test:

Logged into Web Desktop Mgr, but Playbook unplugged -

Domain Networks - Connected

Home or work (private) networks - Not Connected

Public networks - Not Connected

Logged into Web Desktop Mgr, and Playbook plugged in -

Domain Networks - Connected

Home or work (private) networks - Not Connected

Public networks - Connected

Now I just need to figure out what  the exception should be, to add to our existing Windows Firewall GPO for Public Networks.

Re: Blackberry Device Service - Playbook Activation

RIM Http Proxy (C:\program files (x86)\common files\research in motion\scdevicecontroller\rimproxy.exe) needs to be enabled and allowed for the public and domain profiles.
