Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

I've installed the trial of Universal Device Service, it was mostly painless. I have everything installed on a 64-bit win2008 R2 server.

I'm getting an error when adding users and sending activation emails. The on-screen error message is: The system added the user account but could not send the activation email message. To resend the activation email message, view the user profile and click the Device activation settings link.

If I try to resend the email, the error I get is: The system updated the device activation settings but could not send the activation email message. Try again later.

If I look in the smtp server settings on the admin console, it is correctly set to my smtp server. There is no firewall blocking access. From the command line on the server, I can connect to the smtp server.

Any suggestions as to where the problem is?

Thanks.

There is nothing in the event viewer application log, but the system log has this:

If I look in the log files, \Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\Universal Device Service\Logs\GUI\BlackBerryAdministrationConsole.log, I get a long error message:

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

You're not alone on this error. I have an identical setup as yours, with a 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 Server and valid SMTP information. I hope they can fix this issue soon. I have a trouble ticket open with Blackberry about this, so if I hear back from them, I'll update here.

Ditto Same pains here amongst many others.

FYI, If you find IE does not work properly, use firefox.

When saving settings, the IE page flakes out. Works under Firefox.

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

If you look at the error logs located at "x:\Program Files (x86)\Research In Motion\Universal Device Service\Logs\Scheduler," as well as \Core), and search for SMTP, you will find the errors for the outbound email.

If you research these errors, you will come across “the transport code was 0x800ccc6a” and "451" error codes, which point to some kind of bare LF issues on the outbound mail.

This is definitely an issue with RIM and how the UDS sends email via SMTP. Still waiting on my support case. One of their top techs (or so I'm told) asked me to make sure my SMTP settings weren't blank... I wish they had better support for this stuff. I know it's a new product (the tech told me that at least 10 times), but it doesn't explain why they wouldn't have good support for a product they release to the world.

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

[ Edited ]

I ran a few more tests on my end (since Blackberry support is awful), and I was able to get emails working from UDS.

Basically, I can't get UDS to send emails using a standard POP3 mail server. The email address has to be a part of an Echange sysetm, from what I can tell. After switching the SMTP settings on UDS to those of an Exchange account (instead of using a POP3 mail server account), I can now send activation emails:

For example, I setup a generic POP3 email account on one of our mail servers (mail.company.com). That didn't work. I had to create an Exchange email account instead. Non-exchange email doesn't seem to work on UDS from what I can tell.

So, I then created a new email account on our exchange system and changed the SMTP settings on UDS to the following:

Server name: exhange.company.com
(my Exchange server's smtp FQDN... "company" in place of my company's name for privacy reasons)
Port Number: 25
Authentication Type: Credentials
User name: fusion
(my Exchange email account)
Handshake Type: Basic

Hi sirmyk, thanks for all your help.

I checked the scheduler & core logs. There isn't much that references smtp.

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

Found the cause of the problem - the From email address in the Settings - Device Activation Email Template is blank by default.

Put something that looks like an email address in that field, and there you go.

It would have been nice if this was in the install guide - the template is only mentioned if you're using Mobile Fusion Studio with the Universal Device Service (which I'm not using yet).

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

I'm having the same issues sending email.  I do have a valid from address and I've tried sending the activation email to an internal and external address.  Any ideas?

Re: Error sending activation emails with Universal Device Service

The Email address requirements for the SMTP sending is defined in the Admin Guide.

I also changed from Server Name to internal FQDN, Basic and No SSL and this works.
