HI
This is my first time posting on this forum so if I'm missing any information please let me know.
I currently am running BES 4.1.7 on a windows 2003 server with SQL 2000. The BES server is syncing with exchange 2003. I would like to do an in place upgrade to BES 5.0 but I'm not sure if I need to upgrade the SQL server first or will the upgrade installation perform this upgrade for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to upgrade to SQL 2005 express first which is fairly painless.
info here to do it
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc96639
then you can do the inplace upgrade to BES 5.
Here is most of the documentation you need will to install and administer the BB 5.0 server:
Server 5.0 Upgrade Paths:

Server 5.0 Intsallation Support:

Server 5.0 Admin Tutorial:

Then when you are done with the above follow this one if going to 2010.

is it a dedicated remote Full SQL server?
If yes then the process is still about the same to upgrade to Full SQL 2005.

Are you sure it is a full blown SQL server? can you goto add remove programs and report back the version running please?
Many times people think it is a full blown SQL server and it is MSDE but in add remove programs it is shown as SQL.
I dont know many that would install such and expensive software on their BES, they usually have a dedicated SQL server for this.

in that case you should be able to install SQL 2005 with BES servies turned off, reboot and it should work.
Or if you dont want to buy full SQL you can use express.
Either way this will upgrade it

Hi
I ran the setup for SQL 2005 Enterprise and received the following error message from the Upgrade Advisor
SQL Server 2000 Meta Data Services packages are not supported
Existing Meta Data Services packages should be moves to SQL Server storage (in the msdb database) or to structured storage files before you upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005
When I look under Data Transformation Services I do not see any packages listed.
What do I need to do in this instance to continue with the upgrade.
