Software Deployments

Hi Everyone,

First off, let me apologise if this is a daft question, i am new to the world of Blackberry.

I have deployed a new BES server and activated a 2x 9300's.  All is well, everything is working as expected.

I am looking at the Software Deployment options for updating any phones connected to our BES.  Presently when i go to "Search for new wireless Blackberry Device Software Bundles" nothing comes back.

If i go to "Manage Blackberry Device Software bundles" i have only 9 items in the list, all of which are Blackberry version 7.0 for Wireless deployment and for the following models.

9860, 9900, 9810, 9860, 9900, 9810, 9860, 9810, 9360.

As i am sure you have worked out, the 9300 model is not in the list.  I understand the maximum OS for the 9300 is version 6.

One of the 9300's is running v5.0.0.977 (bundle 1602, Platform 6.3.0.63)

The other 9300 is running v6.0.0.534 (Bundle 2391, platform 6.6.0.200)

Clearly the 9300 on v5 should be updatable to v6.0.0.534.

If you could help me to understand the below questions i would greatly appreciate it.

1) Why is the BES not bringing back version 6 for the "Search". Is this related to the "Wireless" bundle, i,e is v6 not available as a Wireless deployment?

2) I have tried using the Apploader and when i connect the device via this, even this comes back and says no updaets are available, any ideas?

Thanks

Paul

Re: Software Deployments

From what I've experienced with this feature, it very much depends on your carrier and whether they've made OTA update bundles of device software available for their customers through RIMs servers.

1) When you're searching, make sure you're changing the "Support Type" field to blank, rather than the default of "unknown". This will list everything available to you. The service will look at your database of BBs attached to the BES and only list compatible packages based on your carrier and model. Not all carriers bother to provide OTA update packages.

Even then, usually major revisions (e.g. v5.X to v.6.X) are not available for over the air updating because they're simply too large. You have to do major updates via desktop manager.

2) Have you tried using Desktop Manager? Be sure to download and install the software package from RIM for your device model/carrier first.

Re: Software Deployments

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

When i change the support type to "blank" i now get only the version 7 software, for the models i previously mentioned. The 9300 model isnt listed, nor is v6.

I am presuming that the OTA isnt available as you say, because i tried doing a Wireless Update from the phone, this also came back and said no updates were available. Its only when i downloaded v6 for the 9300 from the link you provided that i was able to update the phone.

The Provider we are with is 02 UK, is there a way to determine if O2 are providing OTA updates? i,e a list of some sort?

Thanks

Paul
