We are currently running BPS v4.1.4.15 and are looking to upgrade to BES. We have 30 SBE client access licenses. If we decide to purchase BES 5.0 and do a clean install instead of purchasing the upgrade kit for BPS, will these SBE CALs work correctly with BES 5.0?
Also, if we decide to purchase the upgrade package, does it upgrade our current BPS to BES 4.1 or 5.0?
Thanks

BPS cals will work, If you had SBE (15 user BES ) those will not work.
Also, if we decide to purchase the upgrade package, does it upgrade our current BPS to BES 4.1 or 5.0? the 2800.00 USD BES upgrade will upgrade you to BES 4.1.x. Getting BES 5.0 will require 999.00 more.
Thanks
So were you ever on the 15 user SBE BES?
if knot then get then you have to decide which way is easier or cheaper.
Going to BES 4.1.6 will gain you alot. BES 5.0 only get you a few new features and some that devices on OS 5.0 can only use. Also going to BES you will need a dedicated server or VM for it.

Yes... we originally had SBE and then used the free upgrade to go to BPS because of number of user limitations.
So... because we dont want to loose the use of our CALs, it looks like we are going to have to upgrade.
As far as using a dedicated server... we would like to have it on a VM using exchange 2007. Any suggestions on the best way of doing this. I believe we already had problems trying to get BPS on a VM with exchange 2007.

I know people have used Hyper V but this list should help you decide.
Blackberry Enterprise Server compatibility chart

I would knife edge it to the VM and use SQL express unless you have SQL.
Keep in mind that the netbios name of the server usually is the BlackBerry Domain Name/instance (not the actual domain name) This name needs to stay the same. The windows name can change with out issue.
If going to SQL express:
Download and install MS SQL Server 2005 Express if needed.
Download and install MS SQL Server Management Studio Express
Enable named pipes and TCP/IP in SQL express.
Perform a Knife-edge cutover

If users can not surf the internet then do this.
Extra permissions info for BESAdmin account for reference.
KB02276 - Assigning permissions for a BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account
you are on 2007 just install the CDO 1.2.1 from here instead of ESM 2003 tools.
My knife edge notes here when I did it.

If you are currently running BPS and you were to perform a clean install of BES, you wouldn't be able to use the SBE keys.
When moving up from SBE to (eventually) BES, CALs work like a sandwich.
SBE CALs (including one that the original software would have been installed with)
Upgrader key
Enterprise CALs
In order to preserve your SBE CALs, the best bet would be to cutover the BPS install to the machine that will ultimately host the BES and perform the upgrade in-place.

Thanks for that SBE license info, I was searching for proof of it.
