emails are not compressing

[ Edited ]

I experience a problem with the emails, I am using BIS on a BB curve, carrier: vodafone romania. sent emails are not compressing, so that an email without attachments has 4 kb  - as much as an computer sent email. when I attach a picture or two the email has even 2 MB (two pictures attached). what do you think this problem might be?

the custumer care operator said that the outgoing emails are not compressed, only the incoming ones - is this true? anyhow, the vodafone romania custumer care knows nothimg about BB solution.

p.s. before receiving service books, when playing around with composing emails (without BIS beeing activated), I`ve been announced that the pictures in the attach "may be reduced in size".after BIS beeing activated, I am not announced anymore.

Re: emails are not compressing

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

So -- you are not receiving an error message about the lack of compression? It's just a test that you've conducted to determine that there is no compression? If there is an error message, here is a link to the knowledgebase article about that:

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB04415&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_SUPPORTISSUE_1_1&dialogID=75072452&stateId=0%200%2075076042

Hope that helps...or at least gets you further along in your quest.

Cheers!

Re: emails are not compressing

I do not receive an error message about that. But I checked out the `cost control service`, and my BIS traffic dropped down too much - I have carefully watched that and the only possible explaination is that the emails are not compressing.

Re: emails are not compressing

Wait -- I'm confused...so bear with me a moment...

1) Did you run a test, sending from the Storm and from a PC and determine that they are indeed the same ultimate size?

2) You say you are watching the BIS traffic on your account...and that it dropped down...and that meant to you that there was no compression? I might interpret a drop in traffic as indicating that compression was successful. So I am confused...

reply to:

2) hold on :smileyhappy: the traffic dropped too much... I mean the attachments (two pictures) were about 2 MB, and the BIS traffic dropped 2MB. so, I presume there was not any compression..

1) my handheld is a curve, but I think this doesn`t matter. the email size in the final recipient (the address it has been delivered to) was the same: 2 MB.

Re: emails are not compressing

Hi again...apologies...I remain dense...perhaps we are confusing the terminology...let me be a bit more explicit...

1) Sorry...oops...you are right that it likely does not matter which device in this case...I spend most of my time over on the Storm forum and that just slipped past my fingers too fast!  :smileytongue:

So you sent only from your Curve and the recipient received about 2MB? Right? You did not also send from a PC client to compare?

2) OK...I remain confused...so the attachments were about 2MB in size, and your BIS traffic decreased by 2MB? Right? As such, that would indicate to me a 100% compression level rather than zero compression...

I'm sorry that I'm not understanding you...but I'm sure that we can clear this up...I'm just not sure that when you say "dropped" that you actually intend to communicate "decreased"...because if that is what you intend, then it's not making sense to me...yet...

Re: emails are not compressing

hey again:smileyhappy:

Yes, I meant "decreased". Let`s have the definitions set. The carrier`s customer care person told me a story about compression in the following terms: the actual email is being reduced in size (about 20 times than its "real value") when emailed with BB. Thus it is really hard for me to get along with my experience (the "real" 2 MB size was not reduced=compressed because when it had reached the destination it was not smaler at all - it had 2 MB both on handheld and upon delivery to the recipient, and this was reflected in the 2 MB BB traffic "consumption").Whatever with the compression issue, tell me if there is ok to have your BIS traffic decreased with 2 MB in this situation? Or the pictures should have been reduced in size while being attached to the email so than the BB traffic would have been reflected in a much smaler size than 2 MB?

How do I know what`s the size of an email on the handheld? Is there such an option on BB curve?

Hi again,

I've asked for assistance for you from other (hopefully more knowledgeable!) resources...you will hopefully be getting responses in this thread from others now.

Cheers!

Re: emails are not compressing

While I could be wrong here, I believe that your carrier's representative may have been right - I don't believe that outgoing emails are compressed.  I think that this is likely only possible via BES servers.
