Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device

I can only concur with DshX and others. BB10 could have been and may still be RIM's saving moment. they haven't helped their cause with the non-syncing issue. Outlook sync is crucial for most business users. RIM have launched a business phone without the full set of tools.

There appears to be a 3rd party solution which works as advertised and has all the filters and mapping that is needed - Companion Link. it's a $50 solution but well worth it. there is a 14-day free trial and it also syncs notes and tasks. I had tried the $25 BB10sync which was very clumsy and required the Q10 to be in developer mode which in turn needed a device password.

Prior to trying these 2 packages i had done a complete factory reset and spent about 6 hours reloading Link, etc. but still came up with the same error "failed to commit changes to device". So i once again ended up with a working calendar and only about 100 out of my 970 contacts.

It's a real shame as the Q10 is a lovely phone. Give Companion Link a try and hopefully RIM can come up with similar working functionality in the next few days.

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device

[ Edited ]

I have same problems with the BB link - over 2000 contacts !

Tried companion link/BB10 Sync for 10 days - pretty useless and unreliable - takes forever to sync, freezes, and puts in teh wrong fields - messed up my database - I had to restore a couple of times to get my data back from the backup

Hope RIM fixes the problems and adds more options in the set-up.

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device

I tried again to 2-way sync with Calendar only. Although the sync completed after 10 minutes, the entries on the q10 were not transferred to outlook !

RIM, wake up please !

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

this is a copy of what i have posted to another thread and it may help those still being frustrated......

After an intense 48 hours, I have managed to get BBLink to sync a reduced contact list – progressively trimmed from 970 to 485. My elation over CompanionLink was premature and short-lived. Even on its first sync it was bulking up the 970 contacts to a hearty 1400 and immediately writing them back to Outlook. Luckily I took regular copies of the pst and was able to backstep easily. It appears that CompanionLink was writing a copy of each contact with which it had a problem and keeping both. Some entries had 3 copies.

I eventually decided it would be best to persevere with BBLink and work through the issues. To do this, I exported the contact list to Excel, identified the non-synced items and worked through any potential irregularities in those. The Excel export shows all the fields and can be sorted by any field. Unfortunately, the synch process doesn’t appear to work in strictly alphabetical order, so it is impossible to tell which item caused the issue each time and many of the items which hadn’t synched may well have been OK. The only definite problem I had was that about 6 of the anniversary dates were at 01/01/4015 – as previously reported by another contributor. There were some alpha characters in a few of the telephone fields, etc. In all, it took 6 iterations of the contact list and about 12 hours’ work.

Thank you to everyone here for their advice. There are a couple of issues which I would like to escalate back to BB so I hope they monitor these threads. Perhaps a few of you may already have some answers

  1. 2-way sync is working for contacts, but calendar events added on the device do not get transferred to Outlook. New Outlook calendar events do write to the device. Any ideas?
  2. i also note that events and items added in the device and then subsequently deleted in Outlook, reamin on the device.
  3. It would be good to have a menu item in the device contacts which would give a total count of contacts which could then be compared with the Outlook count so that one could pick up any new duplicates or items failing to sync.
  4. It would be nice if the whole sync process didn’t fail because of 1 poor record. It should skip that record, report or log the issue and continue with the balance of the sync. Not knowing which field in which item is faulty makes it next to impossible to fix.
  5. BBLink completes the sync with a message that it has successfully done the job. But the information section on the top left of the desktop still states “Last Sync – never”, whereas it does properly record the time and date of the last backup. when it does the next sync it does folow the intelligent process and only re-write the changes items, so it does recognise previous syncs. Any ideas?

We have a public holiday in SA today, so I’ve effectively spent 2 days of the long weekend sorting the phone out. And it was imperative that I got it sorted before work commences on Tuesday as I rely on it as part of my administrative toolkit. I’m a sole consultant and don’t have pa’s and admin people doing all that for me! Going back to the 9780 wasn't an option because i had to get a micro sim which won't fit the 9780. Hopefully I can now enjoy the phone!

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

Hi Noel,

that's an amazing bit of work you've performed.

I'm happy to hear that your contacts are now synced OK.

But, IMO, that's definitely NOT a way an user should be supposed to follow.

Man, this is not some homebrew free open source 1000th Linux variant, this is a key software by a reputable company whose products are mostly used by professionals for their professional work!

I would not object if there were poor video software, for instance. But this is a piece of software which I'm depending on professionally.

Therefore, I'm expecting the BB guys to come with the true first release of the software very soon. No further betas please!

And it would certainly not do any harm if the BB folks would tell us that this is the 1st priority for them.

It definitely should be, BB folks. Or else we could see your faithful customers jumping on another train.

And that would be a great pity, because the device AND BB10 are lovely indeed.

I keep my fingers crossed.

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

I whole-heartedly concur, especially with your statement "But this is a piece of software which I'm depending on professionally." Also a piece of hardware we depend on every day. We bought BB because we have long term, generally good experience of previous BB products - hardware and software. We didn't buy BB for Facebook and Youtube, video capability and all those media products. We bought BB as a solid and reliable business tool.

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

I agree MaKo7, the work that Noel undertook is amazing but this is not the solution we need to hold our interest in the BB Q10.  For this to be a proper business phone we need a seamless and errorless sync program 100% compatable with MS Outlook.

BTW when trying to sync the Q10 with Outlook a few random contacts (+/- 100) do come across.  Has you or Noel figured out how to delete all of these random contacts on the Q10 without selecting each them one by one?  Even the multi-select icon in the Q10 side menu seems to require selection one by one.  Very time consuming!

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

This is interesting dialogue and clearly a lot of us share the same pain.

That said is anybody from the BB team looking at this forum?

I would have expected even an aplogetic comment af this point. Sad for an organization that is looking for a re-birth.....

Let me know if I missed something!!!!1

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device....solution

Well somewhere down this stream FrankieS, a BB technical advisor, posted following link: http://blackberry.com/btsc/KB34381

So they have seen the problem at least.

That's all till now.

Stay tuned :-)

Re: Link v1.1.1 sync error: Failed to commit changes to the device - partially solved!

Hi,

today I installed BBL 1.1.1.32 and tried again.

This time, all went well - all my contacts & calendar entries were transmitted from my Outlook account to the Q10. Congrats to the team!

Unfortunately, I encuntered another issue - if I create a calendar entry on the Q10, it won't get copied to the Outlook calendar when I sync again. The other way around all goes well. I'll create another stream for it.
