Accepted Solution

9105 Wi-fi

I've successfully connected my Pearl to my home network via wi-fi, and I can access the internet - but only when I have data turned on. The moment I turn off data I have no web connection, even though I'm still connected via wi-fi to my home network.

Am I correct in thinking that I should be able to use wi-fi without data, so that I am accessing the web via my home internet connection & not the phone network?

Tnx.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

No, on the 9105 Operating system, you must have Data Services ON to use data. Any data.

I'm using OS 6. Is that still the case?

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

Thanks for that, though it's not what I hoped for. This then means the phone company charge for ANY web access (I've just checked my bill) regardless of whether it's wi-fi or not.

Cheers.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

No, that's not true.

IF WiFi is connected and in use, then data used over WiFi will not be charged to your mobile account.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

My phone is connected to my home network via wi-fi (it's shown in the connected times on my routers set up page & my network name is shown along side that of the mobile operator on my handset), yet I can only connect to the web when the handset has data turned on.

When I connect to the web in this way I am charged by the phone company.

I've been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to get a wi-fi only connection in order to avoid phone charges.

I'd be grateful to anyone who could solve that one.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

You need to speak with your mobile provider, then. They should not be charging you for data IF you are connected over WiFi. It doesn't work that way.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

As it's been pointed out in order to use a wi-fi connection data must be turned on. It's impossible to isolate web data (wi-fi) from other BB service data (emails, app updates etc). Obviously a major point of BB is the services such as email & other apps, so consider these essential.

If anyone can tell me how to get just web data please do, I'm eager to learn the secret. Until then - unless RIM enable wi-fi with data off - phone charges will be incurred. Hence the reason for my initial enquiry.

Re: 9105 Wi-fi

With that, then, your mobile provider is cheating you and charging you for WiFi data usage when you're not on the mobile network.

Anyway, on your 9105, what you are asking is not possible. It is possible on later issue OS7.1 device to turn off Data Services while using a WiFi connection. It is not on the 9105.

Anyway, your original question was answered, correctly.

You really need to have this discussion with your mobile provider. I don't know who that is, you've not disclosed it in your profile.

Good luck.
