I've been using my blackberry Pearl 8130 on MTS for nearly a year, and just this week, I've had a black "sludge" along the left side of the screen. It's been slowly spreading, and is now cutting off abour 2mm on the left hand side, bulging in the middle. I know it is not a broken LCD, because if you look in at an angle from the right, you can see the edge of the LCD screen fine.
The problem is I only have 2 weeks left on my 1 year warranty, and the way the system works with MTS, is they send the phone to RIM, and give me a new seed stock replacement. If RIM determines that this isn't covered, I have to pay full retail value for the replacement. None of the sales associates at the MTS store said they had seen anything like this before, and couldn't tell me if it would be covered by warranty or not. I know that I have never gotten the phone wet, and the moisture indicators under the battery do not show any evidence of water ever being in the phone.
Here is a picture taken with my macbook that shows where it is bulging in on the side

Here is one at an angle that shows this is infront of the LCD screen, and not a problem with the screen itself.

I apologize for how blury these images are, they were taken using Photoboth on my macbook.
Does anyone have any information on this problem? Is this a known issue?

I Have this EXACT same issue with my pearl. Did you ever find a solution?? I can't find any other instances of this happening!
Thanks!

I ended up getting it replaced under warranty. I believe that the gasket between the LCD screen and the case was decomposing or something. I did find an ebay store at the time that sold a new gasket, but it would mean taking your blackberry apart to replace it. That would certainly void your warranty and I would advise against it.

Did u ever accidentally dropped your phone,if so then that might be the case with the screen as when the phone falls the LCD starts bleeding and slowly the whole display will eventually become black and only solution would be to give it to a repair center that specializes in ..i was having problem with my LCD on my Bold 9700 and got it replaced and now it works like a charm...u can give them a shot at
