Desktop manager just won't work

Yes, I've googled. Yes, I've installed USB drivers. Yes, I've uninstalled, cleaned the registry, reinstalled, and hard-reset the phone. Yes, I've done every single thing that google told me to and my phone still won't work with my computer. I have no idea why it's this much work to connect a simple USB device to a computer and get a program to recognize it, but the stupid thing JUST WON'T WORK.

 

Does anyone know how to get a pearl 8110 to connect to a windows xp computer with a standard USB cable?

I use DM 4.5 with no issues.

 

Once in a while I have to reboot to get a second device to connect.
