Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

Hello,

You need to find on your provider's website (hopefully it is not Verison, who are more difficult) the multilanguage handset software. Install tihs on your PC or MAC. Start DEsktop Manager and connect up your BB. DM should find that there is new software for your device and prompt you to load it.

Do the software update. As you go through the routine you can tick as many language support options as you like. The DM will load all the new software (having backed up your date and then restored it back on your handset. Your phone will now support these languages. To change keyboards, press at the same time ALT and RETURN. This brings up a keyobard selection page. Select the one you want and your can now type in this language. If you are not a "blind" typist in Russian, I suggest you select the American or US Russian keyboard - this is phonetic, so you get П when you type P and so on.

Actually, what I said about the Russian keyboard may only work on full QWERTY keyboards. Have not tried it on a 8100. But it is worth a try. You should read the languages without any problem anyway.

Do not know about Hebrew.

Mikhail.

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

Hello, Julia,

Download a European version of the latest software for your BB Curve. (Go to www.O2.co.uk and find their Blackberry software download section). The latest version I found for the Curve 8310 or 8320 is 4.5.0.55. (You can also go to www.vodafone.co.uk)

Install it on your computer (the same one you have your Desktop Manager on. Go to Programme Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/AppLoader directory. Remove the "Vendor.xml" file, or rename it, if you prefer.

Connect your Curve to the computer and start DM. Desktop Manager should now find that you have new software and offer to update your device. Accept and upgrade your software. As you go through the process it will give you choices on language support. Select Russian, de-select any that you do not need. Complete the upgrade. Do not disconnect your Curve from your computer at any point. It will be re-started by DM several times through the process. You should not loose any data on your BB, as the DM backs up your data and them restores it automatically.

Once your Curve is working again (you may have to do Enterprise Activation again, if you get your mail from a hosted service or your company BES), press Alt and Return at the same time and you should see the Keyboard selection screen. Select the keyboard you want (Russian Federation Russian, or Americal Russian keyboard) and you are typing in Russian.

I have done this on a Curve 8310, on a Curve 8900 and even on a 8700 (you obviously need the correct software for each phone). Worked on all of them.

Mikhail.

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

You should be able to see Russian without any changes in the OS. At least I haven't seen an OS after 4.2 which does not support Cyrillic.

Hebrew...i think I've seen at least one build that doesn't have the Hebrew alphabet as built-in...it had to be installed additionally.

Typing is a bit more complicated.

All in all, if you want complete and proper support for additional languages you will have to install the ML version as indicated above. Even that approach will hit rock if one wants languages not included in it, though.

Another approach is to install the fonts needed to see messages in additional languages - if not already available as I believe Cyrillic is - and then use some solution that provides means to type in the desired language.

One such solution is InterType - see it at http://blackberry.beiks.com/intertype/ .

Be advised that all mentioned approaches have their pros and cons...make sure to read carefully what they have to say about it and if you rely on 3rd party add-ons like InterType always try before buying :-)

(and yes I am from the company that created InterType...that doesn't make the suggestion any less or more valid)

Hello, everybody!  I'm morry to post in the wrong topic, but people here seems so nive and helpful that I wanted to address them.

I have BlackBerry Tour 9630 and I can't figure out if there's a way to type in Russian on it.  I have Sprint provider, so InterType unfortunatelly is not working:smileysad:  Is there any other way to make my phone capable in typing in Russian?

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

As I responded in another forum InterType has very little to do with your carrier being Sprint. Only limitation is Sprint doesn't allow short messages to be sent in UCS-8 and instead only supports fixed 7-bit encoding.

That limitation does not prevent InterType from taking Cyrillic input, it barely prohibits any non-latin short message to be corrupt before even being sent to the carrier.

That does not apply to emails or web searches, for example.

BTW I use Sprint too.

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

Can you please tell me more about how to use this software then?  Because then I try to type a text message using InterType, it only sees ?????? ? ???? and no words.  Am I doing something wrong?  I read the instruction for InterType  (about using Russian language in emails and text messages) and there it said that I need to change 7bit to UCS2, and it also said that Sprint hides this option and therefore you can't send sms in russian.  Am I reading it wrong?

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

You are getting it right.

You can't send short messages in Cyrillic on CDMA carriers or at least I do not know a way of doing it.

I know that the BlackBerry message composer certainly is capable of taking Cyrillic. What's causing the question marks is a global device configuration setting, which fixes the message encoding to 7-bit; it's hidden and I do not know how to modify it.

if someone does then please share it - with or without InterType this could prove to be a useful hack.

Of course, chances are that it's fixed and hidden for a good purpose. If the carrier's servers do not know how to handle wide message encoding (doubtful, but not impossible) then there is a perfect sense on why they should limit 7-bit use.

Once again, note this does limit does not apply to emails or web requests.

Re: Hebrew/Russian on BlackBerry 8100 Pearl

I agree that proposed solution with multi language device software update might work for Curve, BUT. Users of Pearl don't waist your time trying to find Russian input language in RIMs device software. There is no Russian input language available from RIM for Pearl. I tested this O2 update and have not found it as well as in updates from other operators. But thank you very much for useful information especially to whom who told in this discussion about InterType from Beiks. It works very good for me.
