Does it ever boot up? Or does it constantly hourglass when it's up and running?
Sounds like the device may be running out of memory.
Can you check under Options | Status and make note of your File Free number. Afterwards reset the device by removing the battery and 1 min and replace it and let the device reboot. After it's done check and see if your File Free Number increased.
Also do you have a lot of third part applications on the device that you don't need? If so you can do into Options | Advanced Options | Applications and delete the ones you no longer need.
When you go to close an application, use the menu key and select Close. If you use the escape key or power button, then some apps will still be running in the background, which could account for the slowness.

Are you closing out of the apps using your menu key | Close to close out of the apps? If not then the apps will be running in the background and can drain the battery faster. Also if you leave your bluetooth on or the device tries to continuously acquire a signal, then the battery will drain faster.
Here are some other reasons:

This is also happening on my Pearl. It is extremely annoying and it is making the phone practically useless. Besides not getting any emails, the hour glass is constantly flashing on my screen and when it's on the screen I can't use the device. I have to wait for the moment in between the hour glass flashing to do any trouble shooting, making trouble shooting that much harder.
I thought this hour glass may be the reason I have awful battery life and the forums are verifying that assumption.
I've been re-booting by removing the battery and it seems to help for a short time but the problem comes back every time. This is my 4th Pearl...before the prior ones were deleting SMS messages, etc. I have had nothing but issues with this phone. Please help!

I'm certainly not the most advanced user, but believe me I have tried taking out the battery. Numerous times. I've also confirmed that I have plenty of memory available. I have pics and videos saving to my memory card.
My phone/emails had worked fine for months and then suddenly the Pearl stopped getting emails and started w/ the hour glass thing.
Any help is appreciated :-)

Verizon.
I run a MacBook Pro w/ Windows XP Pro in Parallels.
I am so frustrated right now it is hard to type. I am thinking about the scene tomorrow @ the Verizon store when I ask them to replace my Pearl for the 4th time. Why should I have to have ANY product replaced 4 times? I would fire someone if they couldn't get something right by the 3rd time. I am certain that they are going to give me hell when I politely ask for a Storm or even a **bleep** Curve instead of the obviously flawed Pearl. Last time when I explained that the phone was flawed they said they didn't care and I could only replace a Pearl w/ a Pearl (or I could buy anything...which obv wasn't happening. At this point they should be paying me for all of my time they have wasted).
As I'm trolling through the message boards looking for solutions the hour glass reappeared and I had to remove the battery. My first instinct was to smash the phone but I fought through it.
I count on this device and it is seriously letting me down. I don't get why it simply stopped getting my emails? I did NOT change any settings or install anything new...it simply stopped working. I have plenty of memory and I double checked my emails settings anyway and all looks great.
Frustrated and gladly accepting any help :-Z

I am having the exact same problem.
Pearl has worked beautifully for quite some time, when yesterday, out of the blue, I get the hourglass of doom draining my battery all day. I have removed the battery multiple times, I have removed and replaced the SIM card but nothing seems to help. It's definitely not the memory issue as I have verified that I have lots of free memory.
Anyone had this issue and found a solution?
