What is data services?

I see this in my options, "Data Services: On." What are data services? Do I need it on all the time? Does it waste battery?

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Data services is a "Good Thing"! :smileywink:  You want it on!

"Depending on the wireless service plan associated with the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry smartphone user might be able to turn off data services on their BlackBerry smartphone, such as email, personal identification number (PIN), and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messaging, as well as the browser service. When data services are turned off, only the phone and Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging services are available on the BlackBerry smartphone."

Thanks,

Re: What is data services?

I turned mine off. I wanted the phone for wifi capabilities rather than mail or browsing. Since I travel with a laptop (no phone supports the full version of Photoshop) I don't need the browser nor email. Just out of curiousity - how do you reinstall it? If I decide to get another phone, I would want to put it back. Gamma

Re: What is data services?

I can't download some apps like facebook or msn because it says: 'data services unavailable'.

I'm new to all of this so I'm not sure what to do?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

To use the proprietary BB/RIM services, you must have an adequate data plan from your carrier. The carriers host BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) for their BB users. Typically, BIS is not available via generic data plans. Many carriers call what is necessary The Blackberry Data Plan. Whatever they call it, it is the carrier who delivers BIS to their BB users -- contact them for assistance. Once you have a BIS-capable data plan on your BB (at whatever fees your carrier will charge, btw), you will then have access to whatever level of services you subscribe to from your carrier.

Good luck!
