Stop any apps that may be running in the background thereby using up needless battery power when the unit is on standby

Set the general behaviour to Paused and they will not run in the background. In fact it's a job to keep them running when you want them to!
You can't kill the mesages app which will still run.

Well, that helps explain what he wants.

 

Just close the apps running in the background will help also.
