I have been discussing on other forums about these keyboard issues and, so far, it points to a software problem. See, people have been saying that the problem with some keyboards is that Playbook will only work properly with HID profile-enabled devices rather than SPP profile, but I have an Apple BT keyboard that doesn't even have SPP profile and it won't get response for some keypresses and accented characters won't show. ç, ã, à, é, they just won't show on Playbook's screen, no matter which key sequence you try ('+c or right alt+c will render the same nothing).
Given that RIM's new platform is but a very good UNIX with a fancy GUI on top, and ancient linux times showed me that bad pagecode support will render those bogus results (and even worse ones), it does indeed point to software. What makes it worse is that it could be easily fixed - code pages are abundant and implement them is a matter of minutes. RIM shows no goodwill on fixing that, though.
