Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

Just wondered if you can provide the name of the software that you are using for conversion of the DVD to MPEG4? I want to convert DVD's I own to view on the playbook.

I also have a Sony 1080p video recorder that I would like to convert, edit and transfer to the playbook. I can view them on my TV, but would like to save them in a format that retains the quality, and then transfer that quality to the Playbook.

Also, what is the format of the movie that came with the Playbook. H.264, MPEG4 or AVI?

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

The PlayBook HiDef Demo is encapsulated in a MPEG4 enveloppe.
so we're sure it's not an AVI envelope.
Inside that MPEG4 envelope, the video encoder used is either H.264 or MP4.

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

I was able to use avs4you to encode a DVD for playback on the Playbook. Unfortunately, the sound is out of sync with the movie. I think I will start all over and use some of the suggestions above. Thanks.. Do you think that when RIM gets the Appstore working properly (I tried to buy an app, but it kept rejecting my card) that they will have movies that could be downloaded directly, formatted for the PB?

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

I use AVS software - AVS Video Converter, version 8 with good results. It's unfortunately slow, but it seems whatever conversion software is used it will be slow if you want a good result.

Here's the specs I use for the PB. I was getting audio lag with a different setting but these work fine:

- Video

  - H.264 codec

  - frame size 1280x720

  - bitrate 800

  - frame 30 fps

- Audio

  - MP3 codec

  - sample rate 48000Hz, 16 bit

  - bitrate 192 kbps

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

hello bsalloum,

are you sure you are using 1280x720 ? How does it render on the PlayBook?

because the PlayBook screen definition is 1280x600 so either you lose the right & left sides the image, or you get a distorted image, or you get a smaller image with black bands on top & bottom...

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

Yes I am using 1280x720, I actually didn't notice the PB is 1280x600. It does render fine at 720, but next time I'll try 600. Thanks for mentioning it!

Re: Converting video for PlayBook - formats and settings

To Convert Windows Media Center recorded shows, I open the WTV or DVRMS file in Windows Live Movie Maker and then Save it out as a WMV file.  They seem to play well on the Playbook.
