If you've got your web browser open to check for emails on hotmail or whatever ...and you put the PB into Standby ... does it continue to check ... and do other apps continue to work ... or does Standby sort of put everything into a sleep or hybernation until you "wake it."

I often access my device from my desktop computer to copy files to it while it is in standby, and the WiFi is turned on.

Proton2, yep, that's normal.

As I noted in my post, "if nothing is actively using WiFi, then after a while in Standby the WiFi is effectively shut off or put in a very reduced (probably receive-only) mode that uses little power. "

That "receive-only" mode would be capable of detecting attempts to contact it, at which point it could wake up to re-establish normal communications. Any details of how that's done are beyond me. RIM folk have confirmed that WiFi is not simply left fully on in standby, if nothing is using it.
