Re: Lithium battery myths dispelled

Good suggestion...

My preference is to charge it in Standby rather than turn it off. This way, I can use the tablet very quickly rather than have to wait for it to do the full startup process. It comes out of Standby very quickly.

I found the Playbook to be so stable, it is very rare that I ever have to re-set it.

I do the same - charge in stand-by. It takes only a few hours and it's 100% full.

It happened only once that it didn't want to charge, I shut it down, recharged and everything was OK.

Normally, I never shut it down and keep it in stand-by. So, no long boot sequence, PB is ready in a matter of seconds (just to type my password), charging is correct, etc.

Re: Lithium battery myths dispelled

I found that when the Playbook does not accept charge, I simply disconnect the charger, and then put it back again.

The control for the Playbook's internal power and charge regulation is controlled by a uPC controller in the power circuits, which is instructed from the main CPU. Sometimes it does not respond properly. When disconnecting the charger and re-connecting, it does a re-set of this area. The more drastic approach, but rarely required is to do a re-set of the Playbook. :smileyhappy:

With the optional quick charger, I like the magnetic connector. I have had instances where there is poor contact. This connector uses surface point contact rather than insertion. As for preventing wear and tear this is an excellent system. The fix  with the point contact connector is to take a tissue and carefully clean the contacts on both the Playbook connector and the charger connector. Be gentle with this. The tisssue can be slightly dampened with a little alcohol, or better contact cleaner for electronic devices. Do not ever use water based cleaners.

The problem is sometimes a small amount of dust or dirt can get on to the connector contact surface. With surface contact type connectors this is a common problem. With the insertion type contacts, the connector is normally kept clean by the friction of making the connection. With these the dirt or oxidation problem has to be severe, or a connector has to be defective to have a contact problem.

Re: Lithium battery myths dispelled

I have some difficulty with this. I turn my pb off. Plug in charger - red neon whilst charging! Eventually green light shows and I remove charger lead switch on. - full charge.

So what exactly am I doing wrong?

Nope!  Thanks for asking. I was using a little bit of irony to point out that from my experience you don't have to keep it on to charge fully. :Cowboy:

That is correct, that issue was addressed a while ago with a software update.

Re: Lithium battery myths dispelled

The charger that comes with the Playbook is the regular charger for this tablet. There is an optional fast charger for the Playbook. This optional fast charger uses a magnetic contact connector on the bottom of the tablet right next to the micro USB connector.

I did not time the difference with charging time when using the fast charger, but I can tell you it is much faster than with the standard Playbook charger.

I tried the standard Blackberry phone charger on the Playbook. It took many hours to charge this tablet. This is to be expected because it is rated at a much lower current than what is recommended.

Re: Lithium battery myths dispelled

When the PlayBook is in standby, the regular charger will take about 3.5h for a full charge, while the rapid charger will take about 3.2h.

When the PlayBook is on, the rapid charger will take the same amount of time (as it has lots of extra capacity to both power the PlayBook while in use and to charge the battery at full speed).

The regular charger will, if the PlayBook is in use, take longer than usual as the other components steal power that would have gone into charging the battery. Presumably with some particular set of conditions it would take twice as long as the rapid charger takes (i.e. 6.4h or longer), which would be the only time it merits the "2x faster charging!" claim they make for it.
