Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

Hi Irfagan!
For power issues you shouldn't need to use Desktop Software unless you suspect it's caused by a software issue after you've tried all the steps mentioned before and those didn't work. If so, sure, you can try reloading the software through Desktop Software but bare in mind that this won't solve any power issues, it will only solve software issues.
The one thing you have to remember is to not let it discharge, you can recharge PB at any time with no fear of "vicing" the battery!
If, for whatever reason, the battery does discharge, it is no nightmare, no problem, no special issue! You just need to plug the PB wall charger in and leave it untouched for at least 6 hours (or longer even, in some cases). This, in 90% of times, will solve it! If not, check the steps mentioned before!
Probably the question in everybody's mind is why does the PB battery work this way, right?
Well, the answer is, this is so because the battery management in the PB is mostly done by software instead of hardware. Actually around 10% to 15% is hardware managed and the rest is software managed. This drastically reduces the normal charging times (which is great!) but in the odd cases where it becomes fully discharged, the hardware managed part of the battery will take an extended amount of time to have enough juice to boot the software driven part of the battery.
I don't know if this makes sense but it's the easiest way I find to explain it... :-)
Hope this helps!

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

one more time didnt help I am afraid... its got to be embarrassing for RIM. I have 3 friends who bought at the same time and have the same problem... 2 red blinking lights ... cant charge, cant reboot, nothing. I liked the device a lot out of the box...agree its a lovely interface....but come-on...this is getting ridiculous. Nice interface or not...if you cant use it ... its useless.

[ Edited ]

Irfagan...agreed! The real pity is that many of the early adopters are techies and they are still having problems. This is a bit of an issue with RIM with their plans to get enterprise uptake...as the early adopters impact enterprise decisions. Not good.

Anyway. Have tried everything on the forum and still only two red lights flashing. No green ones. Using the original charger. Unable to get a connection to the computer. Tried all the reboot options. May need to take it back to the store. First time I have ever had to return hardware...guess I have been lucky.

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

leave it on the charger for an hour and then on Playbook press power button and both Vol + - buttons for 10 seconds to reboot it.

try this 3 times and see if it will boot up.

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

Looks like after 9 pages of the same suggestion, someone would follow these diections. I used the Car charger, and got it up past the 10% mark then anything would chage it. Lesson learned, don't let it go dead. Same thing happens with iPods and iPads.

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

Its suggested to never let the PB go dead. Its the same for other makes of tablets. The PB charging circuits are is uPC controlled. Control has to be established to allow charge. Technically speaking its not good to let chargeable batteries run down to flat.

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

Tried everything...still nothing. just the stupid two red lights flashing. One of my friends got his to reboot...but the other is having the same problem. Understand shouldnt let go dead, but never been an issue with other tablets. Think I'll just return it and be done with it. Problem is in Hong Kong the distributor is clueless about PBs.

Re: Play book wont power up or light just blinks

OK. So I didnt go back to the store today. Thought I would keep trying. Charged for 6 hours. Then went through all the button combinations. Nothing. Left it for 30 minutes came back to try again. Now no red lights flashing. Grrrrr. Anyone from RIM on this forum got an idea? Or maybe some suggestions on how I can get someone to take a look at it here in Hong Kong rather than a shop assistant from Fortress who is still trying to work out what this Playbook thing is...Thanks.
