Normally on the tablet there is no need to use the power button, unless the tablet was shut down and therefore would be required to turn back on again. With my tablet, I have not used the power button in months.
Having a small power button also protects it from being accidently pressed. Some devices have a recessed power button, which in its own way also makes it more difficult to access.
With my tablet, I only keep it in standby when it is not in use. When I am back home or in my office and it is not being used I put it in the charger. I only re-start it or shut it down is there is a condition where it is necessary to do so. I have my tablet set to go to standby after a few minutes if it is not in use.

It would really help if there was a manual with it when you buy it! I've never before had to figure everything out with nothing but the onscreen video!

When I got our first Playbook found it easy to set up and do any configurations. There are many on line tutorials for it.
The first thing I did was read through the setup menus. Then I read the built in help program. The PB is a lot more simple than Windows or MAC OS to deal with.

There should never be a reason to turn the PB off. Mine is set to sleep after 3 minutes.
