Is someone else also having htis issue? My PlayBook successfully downloaded the ~270MB updates and installed it. It hten restarted but all I am looking at now (for the last couple of hours) is colored circles. How to fix this?

Same issue here with multiple Playbooks. I bought one from Staples and they also tried the update on three units in-store. All four would not get past the startup screen after the initial software update (to 1.0.1.1690). I am on hold with Blackberry support trying to find a solution.
Just finished talking to Blackberry tech support. This problem can be fixed by using the latest BlackBerry® Desktop Software (PC version only) and attaching the dead Playbook to your computer and running the software update there.
The fifth Playbook I tried this morning did work with the over-the-air software update.
