I have done the above many times.
I can confirm that device manager 7 is installed through add/remove programs, but when I look in device manager it shows 6.0.0.44
I can not get my playbook running the 2.0.1.358 to show up as "Z" drive.
In Desktop Software it shows my "Software Version" as 0.0 Bundle 0
It then says that an update is available, 2.0.1 Bundle 358
I already have this.
I have been struggling with this for weeks now.
I am a big blackberry fan, but wow, this is unreal, I can not get videos on my playbook for travel anymore.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I don't know where I read this, but I read that BlackBerry did an update so that u can't share backup files anymore with any blackberry and that it is linked to your blackberry ID. Update 2.0.1.358 is the first to use it and there is an update to blackberry desktop software coming, 7.1, if it isn't out already. I get what you're saying, that is happening to me also. I haven't plugged mine in to the computer for weeks now because of this. But at least it isn't our fault!
The encrypted backup has nothing to do with playbook not connecting to your PC.
Maybe you would be better with enabling filesharing on playbook. I use it to transfer stuff to my kids playbooks so they can still use them while I add music, pics, vids
